The first yacht to finish the 2003 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is expected to cross the finish line off Hobart's historic Battery Point this evening.

Tim Cox, chairman of the Race Committee, estimates that the line honours winner should finish between 8 and 10pm,  depending on wind conditions during the day off the Tasmanian East Coast.

"However,  the forecast is favbourable and they should make good time down the coast," he said. "At three o'clock this morning,  Skandia was 21 miles north of Eddystone Point on the north-east tip of Tasmania, giving her about 200 miles to sail."

Cox said Skandia was less than two miles in front of the New Zealand super maxi,  Zana, with Grundig in third place.
