Yendys scores second win in third race of Rolex Trophy Series

The blessing bestowed by the Reverend Geoffrey Ross on his son, Geoff’s brand new ocean racing yacht Yendys certainly found favour with the wind gods today with the 52-footer scoring two successive wins on day one of the Rolex Trophy Series.

Geoff and his strong crew picked the wind shifts well on a day of light wind racing over short courses off Sydney Heads, sailing the former European champion to the top of the leader board, with a fourth and two firsts in the grand prix IMS division.

It was the first day of racing in Australia for the Judel Vrojilk 52, which previously raced on the European IMS circuit as a Portugese owned and crewed boat.

Ross bought the boat this year in a bid to repeat his 1999 Sydney Hobart Yacht Race Overall victory with his previous boat, also named Yendys, and his father and the Portugese Ambassador to Australia blessed and christened the new boat at the CYCA on Friday.

From the performance today of the powerful-looking green-hulled sloop, it looks like his choice of a new boat is on the right track.

Yendys won the longer third race today by a comfortable corrected time margin from Syd Fischer’s Farr 50, Ragamuffin, and Nips N Tux, Howard de Torres’ IMX40.

Race three for the IRC division saw a win for the Swan 45, Joe, skippered by Steven David, from first race winner Ichi Ban (Matt Allen) and the consistent Ragamuffin, which like many of the fleet has entered both IMS and IRC divisions, although Yendys is only racing under IMS,  her specialty.

After three races, the provisional points for IMS have Yendys on 164 points, leading Ragamuffin on 161,  Ichi Ban 158,  and Bounder (ex Sting),  skippered by Royal Ocean Racing Club Commodore Chris Little, on 155 points.

Ichi Ban heads IRC with 162 points, from Skandia on 159, Joe 157 and Ragamuffin 156 points.
