Fifty-two yachts now finished rugged Rolex Sydney Hobart Race

While most of the other boats are expected to complete the 628 nautical mile course today, the smallest boat still at sea, Gillawa, is not due to reach Hobart until tomorrow.

A total of 52 yachts have now finished the rugged Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, with seven boats crossing the line in the early hours of the first day of the New Year.

This leaves only seven yachts still at sea at 8am today, with the Tasmanian entry, Why Do I Do It, skippered by Wayne Banks-Smith, slowly sailing up the Derwent River towards the finish.

Since midnight, as New Year’s Eve revellers crowded the waterfront, the yachts to finish have been Wahoo, Addiction, Quality Equipment, Sailmaker, By Order of the Secretary, Leila and MCQ Polaris.

While most of the other boats are expected to complete the 628 nautical mile course today, the smallest boat still at sea, Gillawa, skippered by Canberra-based yachtsman David Kent, is not due to reach Hobart until tomorrow.

At 8.00am this morning Gillawa was 49 nautical miles east of Eddystone Point on the north-eastern tip of Tasmania, still with 188 miles to sail.

The formal prizegiving for this 60th anniversary Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race will be held at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania in Hobart at 12 noon today.
