Maxis on the water for the SOLAS Big Boat Challenge

Maxis in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race will compete in the criterium of the event, the SOLAS Big Boat Challenge, on Sydney Harbour on Tuesday, December 15.

The line-up for the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s annual invitation-only maxi yacht race includes defending champion Wild Oats XI, SOLAS Big Boat debutant Rambler 88 from the US, Ragamuffin 100, Perpetual Loyal, Ichi Ban and Black Jack. The other US supermaxi, Comanche, is keeping her powder dry until the Boxing Day start of the Rolex race.

Other entries include Jim Cooney’s Brindabella, Rupert Henry’s Chinese Whisper and Ray Roberts’ Hollywood Boulevard.

The 12.30 pm start is off Steele Point at Vaucluse.

This race is not for the faint-hearted as skippers push for the best position at the start before heading off on a 14 nautical mile course on the harbour to Manly and back via some of Sydney’s famous landmarks, including Fort Denison and Mrs Macquarie’s Chair. They complete two and a half laps.

The finish is off the Opera House.
