VIDEO | When The Dogs Bark (1990)

A 1990 short film of the development of communications in the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. Going back to even carrier pigeons!

Rob McAuley was the filmmaker behind When The Dogs Bark which was produced in 1990 with the assistance of Digital.  Rob had “lost” this film and regularly over the years expressed hope of finding a copy.  Here you can see his work and the amazing story, featuring footage from early years including 1945 and 1947, comments by Jack Earl and Bob Bull (Kathleen - 1945), "Boy" Messenger (Horizon - 1945), Frank McNulty (Moonbi - 1947), Gordon Marshall and Peter Green, and footage from on-board the first radio relay vessel Lauriana.

Rob McAuley was a keen yachtsman having joined the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in 1958.  A much-regarded member who passed away on 16 January 2020.
