Ocean Gem was purchased by David Hows in 2011 in Auckland, New Zealand. In November 2013, Hows sailed the Beneteau 445 across the Tasman via Norfolk Island to Southport Yacht Club (SYC), in Queensland. Ocean Gem has now competed in more than 400 club races, regattas and ocean races since January 2014, with successes in the Sail Paradise Regatta, Coffs to Paradise Race, multiple SYC championship titles, the QLD Beneteau Cup and the Solo Tasman Yacht Race. Ocean Gem ventured out of local waters to contest the 2017 Rolex Sydney Hobart and finished 52nd overall and placed fifth overall in the inaugural Brisbane Hamilton Island Race in August winning both PHS and IRC in Division 2.
