Santana

Santana

Santana last raced to Hobart in 2004 when Mike Kelaher retired her from the race. Other results in the 628nm race include 1991 (as Santana Baby Lock) with IMS 37th overall. In 1995, as Leda, she was 71st overall; as Santana in 2000 she was 17th on IRC. These days she is owned by Michael Graham from Lake Macquarie Yacht Club, where her previous owner was also a member. Built in Norway, Graham says Santana has been refurbished and he sailed her to 17th overall for fourth in Division 3 in the 2018 Ponant Sydney Noumea Race. Designed by Ron Holland, she joins a long list of golden oldies in this 75th Sydney Hobart. On crew is Tony (Biggles) Purkiss, who Ralph magazine once listed in eighth place of its 50 Toughest Aussies following a number of incidents that stopped him from nothing; the first was being blinded in the Bali bombing.
