Denali

Denali

Damien Parkes’ yacht, originally designed and built as Matador for the TP25 MedCup circuit, underwent significant structural updates to meet offshore standards after he purchased it. The yacht made its Sydney Hobart debut in 2021 but retired with extensive hull damage. Since then, Denali placed 39th in 2022 and 37th last year.

Parkes and crew have raced in several events in Queensland, including the inaugural GCCM Gold Coast Mackay Yacht Race. However, the boom broke on Day 1, but undeterred, Parkes confirmed they would continue the race under trisail, earning them special recognition for seamanship.

Parkes has an impressive history in offshore racing, with 35 Hobart races under his belt. Notably, he served as watch captain on Vengeance during her Line Honours win in 1981 and on Gretel, which finished second overall in 1980. Additionally, Parkes and his son Nick achieved third overall with the Sydney 38, Next, in 2009.
