Tilting at Windmills
John Alexander skippered Tilting at Windmills to 69th overall last year and is in the skipper role again this time. The modified Joubert 42 had been raced and cruised extensively by Thorry Gunnersen (who passed away in 2018), and his daughter Sarah Gunnersen-Dempsey. Windmills’ history includes eight Sydney Hobarts, Melbourne-Hobarts, the Fastnet, Groupama and Middle Sea races.
Built in time for the 1994 Hobart, her best result was second overall in 2003. She was one of only 59 finishers in 43rd overall in 2004 and placed second in division in the fatal 1998 race. Dempsey and skipper, John Alexander, were both aboard for Tilting’s previous last Hobart in 2014 when she placed 60th. A John Dory sloop, Tilting at Windmills was built by Norman R Wright and Sons in 1994and has a loyal and tight knit crew who have sailed together for many years in Australia and overseas.
