Wild Thing 100
Wild Thing 100 made its debut as a 100 footer in last year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, having been delivered straight from the Gold Coast to Sydney with a few finishing touches still being added on the way. Formerly an 80 footer, she retained her old rig and Grant Wharington sailed her to sixth across the line. Wild Thing 100 took Line Honours in the inaugural GCCM Gold Coast Mackay Yacht Race this year. While she still has her old mast in place, Wharington has plans to replace it with a full rig in February in time for the Brisbane to Gladstone and Transpac races. It will make all the difference to her results in long offshore races.
The yacht is the former Beau Geste, designed by Botin Partners and was formerly owned by Hong Kong’s Karl Kwok. Wharington and Seiffert purchased her and renamed her Stefan Racing in deference to their hairdresser sponsor, Stefan Ackerie. He sailed the 80 footer to fourth over the line in 2021 and sixth in 2022, before extending and rebranding her Wild Thing 100. With a previous Wild Thing, Wharington took Line Honours in the 2003 Sydney Hobart, but while leading the fleet to Hobart in 2004, the yacht lost her canting keel and capsized in the Bass Strait. Fortunately, her crew were rescued.
