Three hours of frustration for Shogun

The competition between three DK 46 design boats in the Rolex Sydney Hobart has been close with Ray Roberts’ Quantum Racing taking the honours.

Second in the class across the line, Rob Hanna’s Shogun from Victoria, had a horror trip up the Derwent.

“The real frustration was the last three hours,” Hanna said.

“We had 30 knots on starboard tack. Then 30 knots on port. Then no breeze! It took us three hours to get here from the Iron Pot!

The Iron Pot light at the mouth of the Derwent is 11 nautical miles from the race finish line at Castray Esplanade in Hobart.

Hanna described the competition with the other DK 46s – Quantum Racing and Dekadence (which Shogun beat across the line – as “fabulous”).

“I think Quantum won it on the first night. They went wide and we got parked in a little hole for about four hours. Other than that I think they are very well matched.

Certainly the other two boats are very well crewed,” Hanna said.

Shogun suffered little damage across the race apart from losing its hydraulics system.
