Berrimilla, the NSW yacht that sailed around the world after last year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in time to make it to the start of this year’s race has finished the race after being becalmed within sight of the finish line.
Alex Whitworth and fellow circumnavigator Peter Crozier are less than six miles from the finish but have no wind. The latest estimate for them finishing is after four o’clock.
During the circumnavigation Berrimilla competed in the Rolex Fastnet Race and Whitworth was awarded the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s seamanship trophy for the year spent at sea.
Berrimilla arrived back in Sydney on December 20 in time for this year's race.
She will be the second last boat the finish the race. Gilliwa is still at sea and more than a day away from finishing.
