Profile

Flying Fish Arctos is the flagship yacht of the Flying Fish Sailing training fleet. Originally built for renowned short-handed yachtsman Don McIntyre for round-the-world sailing, she is exceptionally robust and purpose-designed for demanding offshore conditions — making her an ideal platform for offshore training and the Sydney–Hobart experience.

Flying Fish crews bring together sailors from around the world to train and participate in the Sydney–Hobart race, with a clear emphasis on safety, teamwork and enjoyment. The programme prioritises seamanship and shared responsibility in a supportive environment, with performance viewed as a positive outcome rather than the primary goal.

Across 18 Sydney–Hobart completions, Arctos has demonstrated consistent capability and reliability. While the focus is not on results, the yacht has achieved strong performances under PHS scoring, including class wins in 2010 and 2017, second in class in 2009, and an overall PHS win in 2017. More recent finishes include 5th overall in 2021, 14th in 2022, and 11th overall in 2023, alongside solid results in 2018 and 2019.

These outcomes reflect a well-prepared yacht and disciplined crew approach, reinforcing Arctos as a trusted and effective platform for rewarding offshore sailing.
