Profile
A first Hobart for Sumatra, Shane Diethelm and Peter Vanderwal. Diethelm has sailed since childhood, courtesy of his dad, Basil, a CYCA 64-year member. He is a heart transplant and childhood lymphoma survivor and says “This is more than a race - it’s a mission. We want to inspire others - especially those facing health challenges - to believe in second chances, adventure, and the healing power of the sea.”
A year ago he and Vanderwal decided to do the Hobart and raise funds for charities that have meaning for them: the Charles Curran Institute at St Vincents, Breast Cancer Foundation and Parkinson’s Foundation. Delivering Toucan back from Hobart last year was Vanderwal’s first offshore experience. Sumatra is a Swan 48, used by the Diethelm family to cruise in the USA, Mediterranean and the Caribbean, with some racing thrown in before sailing back to Sydney in 2014.
